What does an environmental officer do?

Human activities can have immediate and long-term impacts on air, land and waterways. These activities can include mining operations, agricultural and industrial practices, and urban development. environmental officers develop systems and offer advice on how to implement working practices that reduce the impact that these activities can have on the environment.

 

Environmental officers work in a variety of roles to protect the environment.

They can work as:

  • Sustainability officers, that provide advice to government and industries on how to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions
  • Strategists, that help develop and implement codes of practice
  • Scientists, that analyse pollution to identify sources, assess the effects, and recommend methods of control and prevention
  • Communicators, that run education programmes, and investigate and report on breaches of environmental guidelines
  • Field officers, that assess and rehabilitate areas affected by logging. mining, construction or degradation
  • Planners, that review and research development proposals and make recommendations to reduce the impact that the land use will have on the environment.

Working with organisations ranging from school groups to construction companies means that you can be a positive influence, knowing you are working towards the long-term goal of protecting Moreton Bay.

Challenges

Managing the environment also means meeting resistance to change. Sometimes you encounter some people who have some old fashioned attitudes about the environment.

Monitoring an organisation’s waste can also be part of the job. The task involves separating and weighing rubbish. That can be a bit smelly.

Job prospects

Environmental management is an area which will continue to grow as the need to consider whether our activities are sustainable increases, and if we are using our resources wisely.

There are opportunities to work in developing countries in the aid field, as well as for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the United Nations.

What to study at school

  • Biology is helpful to develop an understanding of plants, animals and their ecosystems.
  • Chemistry will help with the environmental science side of the work.
  • Maths is helpful with many aspects of the role. English is vital for developing reasoning and comprehension as well as written and oral skills.
