Michael - Civil Engineer

Michael enjoys the creative process. Working as a civil engineer at the Port of Brisbane, Michael has the satisfaction of working on huge projects and seeing the end result.

Growing up on the Gold Coast, Michael was always fascinated by big building projects. At school he always enjoyed maths and physics, so civil engineering seemed the natural career pathway.

After completing a Bachelor of Engineering at QUT, Michael worked as a project engineer for a construction contractor that specialised in high-rise construction. He gained valuable experience, particularly in geotechnical work where the land is prepared for the structure that will be built upon it.

Michael joined the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd as a project engineer three years ago, and in that time has built a terminal, a warehouse, a bridge and a wharf.

What drew me to working as a civil engineer

“Looking at a structure that you have had a hand in creating gives you such a great feeling. Civil engineering appeals to my need to create as well as my analytical side, which loved maths and physics while at school. I love working on big projects and being at the port has enabled me to work on a huge range of projects.”

Career highlights

“My current project, building the General Purpose Berth, is extremely exciting. As the land is adjacent to the river, the project has had several stages, from strengthening the land to constructing the terminal area and of course, building the wharf. Each stage has been challenging and exciting, and of course there is always the need to bring the project in on time.”
