Kylie - Gantry Container Crane Operator
Rather than settling for office life, Kylie wanted a practical career working outdoors. As a gantry container crane operator, Kylie has a career that demands coordination and accuracy.
Kylie began her working life in a lawyer’s office but soon realised that she wanted a more practical career. Looking for something different she answered an advertisement for a general hand at a cotton warehouse and during her three years there gained tickets to drive forklifts and front-end loaders.
Six years ago, looking to progress her career, she sent her CV to P&O, now DP World, and joined them as a stevedore. For the past four years she has held a permanent contract. During that time she studied for, and gained a Dogger Ticket and a Bridging Gantry Ticket. Last year, Kylie successfully applied for the post of Grade 5 Gantry Crane Operator at DP World.
What drew me to working as a gantry container crane operator?
“At school I’d hoped to play softball professionally, so working in an office was never going to satisfy me. Working at a port, and gaining the position of stevedore has opened up a career path for me. I enjoy outdoor work that is practical and needs coordination and accuracy. The shift work is great too as it gives me a huge amount of free time.”
Career highlights
“Gaining my licence to operate the gantry cranes was a huge highlight in my career, and having successfully applied for the role is a huge boost. Every shift I work with a great team and from my office I have a fantastic view of the ships moving through the port, including warships and cruise ships. I also have a great view of the airport and managed to see the new airbus land in Brisbane.”
