Ship Agent
Robert’s career took a new direction when he joined the shipping industry in Sydney in 1999 after having worked as a cabinet-maker since leaving school. His first position was at a container shipping line where he learnt the business, eventually progressing to the role of operations officer at Globestar. As an operations officer he was responsible for recording container movements, ensuring stock rotation, managing leasing agreements, charging hire fees and arranging container maintenance.
Since moving to Brisbane, Robert has worked for K-Line where his role expanded to include working with vehicle carriers and in ship operations. Since joining Inchcape Shipping Services as a ship agent Robert now works with container ships, vehicle carriers and wet and dry bulk ships.
What drew me to working as a ship agent?
“Joining the shipping industry was not a conscious decision, but it is a career move I have never regretted. No two days are the same in this industry, and being a ship agent is a particularly demanding role. Being a small industry there is a terrific sense of camaraderie. The best part is being based at a port where you can see the amazing sights you can experience as part of your every day routine.
This is also an international business, and if you have the desire to travel, this job really can give you the opportunity to work anywhere in the world.”
Career highlights
“This is a role full of challenges and as a result each day is full of small victories. Working in the shipping industry has given me the opportunity to work not only interstate but also overseas. The most unusual travel experience was making the voyage from Sydney to Melbourne by container ship.”
