Ship Planner
Trevor has spent most of his working life with P&O, now DP World, in a variety of roles at a container terminal. After beginning as a stevedore he has progressed through a series of roles including driving forklifts to terminal control clerk. Trevor has worked as a ship planner since 2000 and has found his previous experience invaluable in this role.
What drew me to working as a ship planner?
“Shipping is an industry where changes can happen constantly throughout the shift. Within any working day there can be any number of factors that can mean a change to plans. No matter what happens I need to make sure the ship sails on time otherwise the company will be charged penalties. The challenge of overcoming these difficulties is something that adds a huge element of enjoyment to the day.”
Career highlights
“The camaraderie of shipping is something that is extremely special. The process of loading and unloading any ship involves a great deal of team work.
This role has also given me the opportunity to work on a huge range of ships. I visit each one when I discuss the plan with the ship’s officer. The most memorable and most unusual was a Russian ice breaker, which certainly was a challenge to load and unload with cargo.”
