Lee - Vehicle Spray Painter

Lee is a perfectionist who loves cars. As an apprentice vehicle paint sprayer at the Port of Brisbane, Lee has learnt produce work at the highest possible standard.

Lee is a fourth-year apprentice based at Patrick Autocare. Lee prefers practical work and was never keen on the idea of working in an office. Lee always loved cars and while at school a family member suggested vehicle paint spraying as a possible career. He was offered an apprenticeship before finishing school and began working in a panel shop. After two and a half years there, he was offered the opportunity to move to Patrick Autocare.

What drew me to being a vehicle spray painter at the port

“I’ve always loved cars and completing an apprenticeship is a great way to build a career in the industry. I did start out working in a panel shop, but my Registered Training Organisation (RTO) suggested a move to the port. Although it is a longer journey, the pay is far better, and I have the opportunity to work in a much larger and less crowded workshop. There’s a good atmosphere here too. I’m now being fast-tracked by my RTO and will finish my apprenticeship in February, ahead of schedule. My hours here are only 7.00am to 3.30pm so I have plenty of free time after work.”

Career highlights

“I’m a perfectionist, so working on new vehicles means I can produce work at the highest level. Just recently my TAFE teacher came out to assess my work and he couldn’t spot my repair. That felt good."
