A security coordinator at a port ensures compliance with maritime security legislation by supervising and administering security services that protect maritime personnel, transport, property and assets from unlawful interference.

 

 

What does a security coordinator do?

Would you like a job which requires patience, and good communication and negotiation skills?

A security coordinator organises the protection of maritime transport and property, and the security of those working there by enforcing the port’s Maritime Security Plan. A security coordinator is responsible for:

  • actioning the port’s security processes according to the Maritime Security Plan
  • organising and carrying out security inspections of specified sites throughout the port
  • supervising security personnel
  • investigating all incidents involving fraud, injury and damage to the environment and property
  • preventing and investigating potential security breaches.

 

 

Security coordinators may need to carry out the following tasks:

  • operate a range of security equipment including closed circuit television (CCTV), electronic cardex (alarm) systems and communicate by radio
  • watch for irregular visitors and incidents, investigate and report these to the appropriate authority
  • respond to alarms and check alarm systems and record times of inspections
  • remove from port land all suspicious people and vehicles, gather details and alert the appropriate agencies
  • issue security passes, give directions and make security arrangements for authorised visitors
  • provide assistance to the public and clients.

 

Additional responsibilities carried out by a security coordinator may include:

  • coordinating training for members of the roving security team
  • supervising the roving security teams
  • organising and operating the Visual Message System which advises road users of any changes in traffic conditions
  • supervising  contract security guards working at specific wharves
  • liaising with Port Facility Security Officers and their security teams throughout the port.

This is a role that is constantly evolving and where everyday is different. Almost every day there is something new to experience or learn. Maritime security is a relatively new field of security. It is under constant review as global awareness of maritime security increases and concerns with global terrorism grows. The Port Security team is responsible for reviewing the Maritime Security Plan which protects the port, port workers and operators, and the vessels visiting the ports, by applying cost effective and operationally efficient security measures based on risk assessment.

Challenges

This is a role where difficult situations may occur, and you will need to use your negotiation skills to avert confrontation. You will often encounter situations that you need to handle intelligently using discretion and understanding. As this is a role requiring shift work you may be required to work weekends and evenings.
