A stevedore working at a container terminal facility is responsible for the safe and efficient loading and unloading of ships as well as receiving cargo into and delivery of cargo from the terminal facility.

 

 

What does a Container Terminal Stevedore do?

A Container Terminal Stevedore needs to handle cargo efficiently. To achieve this, the Stevedore has to:

  • focus on the safety of fellow workers
  • treat cargo and equipment with care
  • ensure productivity remains at a rate that meets customer expectations
  • work as a reliable and proactive member of a team.div>

 

A Container Terminal Stevedore undertakes tasks that include:

  • following the ship’s plan to make sure cargo is loaded in the correct place
  • unlashing (loosening) containers, or lashing (securing) containers to the ship
  • working with the gantry crane to secure twist locks on containers being unloaded
  • working with the gantry crane to remove twist locks from containers being loaded
  • loading and unloading containers from trucks arriving at the terminal using heavy forklifts and automated straddle carriers and employing wireless control systems to receive instructions.

 

A stevedore may also need to:

  • enjoy sustained manual work, be physically fit, and capable of lifting and carrying heavy items
  • be prepared to work flexible hours across day evening and midnight shifts seven days per week
  • demonstrate consistently high standards of reliability and punctuality
  • be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • have good communication and organisational skills
  • be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • have a current drivers licence and a reliable means of personal transport
  • share the company’s commitment to building a safe, productive and competitive business.

What to study at school

  • Trade Maths provides you with the numeracy skills needed to calculate some of the formulas involved in handling cargo.
  • English Communications develops the written and oral skills useful in this role.
  • Graphics develops those skills needed to read ship loading plans.
  • Computer skills are helpful for working with computerised machinery.
  • Certificate I or II in Transport and Logistics
  • Certificate I or II in Transport and Distribution

What to study

  • Certificate II in Transport and Logistics
  • Certificate III in Transport and Logistics
  • Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics
  • While not essential, possession of a forklift licence is well regarded

Gaining experience

You can learn about the logistics industry by working in a warehouse where you can work towards gaining your forklift ticket. Working in warehouses will give you a familiarity with the transport and logistics industry, and develop experience working with imported and exported goods.
