Sustainability officers work with a variety of organisations and professionals to help them consider the financial, environmental and social impacts of what they do and commit to activities that benefit the economy, our natural environment and the wider community in which they work. A sustainability officer provides specialist advice on sustainability issues and opportunities to ensure that an organisation:

  • minimises the environmental impact that its activities have by developing, delivering and communicating sustainability initiatives to employees and the wider community
  • uses water, energy and other resources efficiently by collecting, collating and analysing fuel, electricity and other energy use data to provide accurate and timely reporting on energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in line with legislation
  • develops in a way that is financially sustainable by contributing to energy and cost analysis that supports investments in new products, technologies and processes
  • keeps abreast of emerging products, technologies or methods which will help the organisation to achieve its sustainability targets
  • considers and supports the wider community in which it operates and also its employees to ensure it maintains its workforce.

Challenges

Addressing the questions of sustainability can sometime mean meeting resistance to change. Sometimes you encounter some old fashioned attitudes about resources and the environment.
