A transport supervisor works to ensure that all customers, who need goods transported by truck receive the most effective and safe service possible.

 

 

What does a transport supervisor do?

A transport supervisor works on behalf of customers to ensure that their goods are transported safely and efficiently. A transport supervisoris responsible for a number of tasks:

  • ensuring that the vehicles required have drivers
  • checking that all paperwork and procedures are completed correctly
  • liaising and negotiating with the workshop to ensure all the trucks are serviced
  • organising shifts to make sure there are enough drivers
  • managing movements for a fleet of vehicles
  • controlling costs within budgetary constraints
  • co-ordinating bookings and record keeping.

 

 

Transport supervisors need to communicate with a range of people
to make sure that cargo is delivered on time and safely.
These people can include:

  • customers, sales staff, maintenance staff or contractors, and company management
  • drivers
  • warehouse staff
  • fleet controllers who look after vehicle maintenance and movements.

Achievements & highlights

This is a role that is constantly evolving and where everyday is different. Almost every day there is something new to experience or learn. These experiences can include meeting new customers, learning about new products, changes in customs and AQIS requirements, introducing new equipment, and incorporating new safety procedures into work practices.

Challenges

The most frustrating part is the problems that arise when delays or operational difficulties occur along the transport supply network. This is when good organisational skills are needed to find solutions.

This is a role which can lead you into transport or freight management.

What to study at school

  • Trade Maths or Maths A will develop the numeracy skills vital for planning and for the paperwork associated with billing.
  • English provides written and oral skills needed for communicating in this role.
  • Computer skills are useful for record keeping and for coordinating bookings. You will also need to learn to use technology such as radios, Global Positioning Systems, and Remote Frequency.
  • Chemistry will give you an advantage in understanding the dangerous substances that sometimes need to be transported.
  • Certificates I or II in Transport and Distribution
  • Certificates I or II in Transport and Logistics

What to study

  • Various truck licences – LR, MR, HR, HC, or MC
  • Certificate IV in Transport and Distribution – available from many training organisations.
  • Certificate III or IV Business Administration

  • Diploma of Logistics Management

Gaining experience

You can gain valuable experience through truck driving or working in a warehouse; both situations will give you valuable experience in handling goods, and understanding the stages involved in the supply of goods.
