Vehicle spray painters repair damaged paintwork. They need to prepare the surfaces of vehicles, match and mix colours, and apply primer and finishing coats of paint.

 

 

What does a vehicle spray painter do?

Spray painters working on vehicles:

  • touch up and refinish new vehicles with minor defects and damage
  • sand down and remove rough patches on the vehicle with electric air sanders
  • apply masking papers to the vehicle
  • apply primer and finishing coats to the vehicles using air fed spray guns and rub down surfaces between coats
  • touch-up paintwork and apply polish to vehicles
  • remove masking papers and wax and polish finished paintwork

 

Vehicle paint sprayers need to:

  • enjoy practical work
  • have good eye-hand coordination
  • have normal colour vision
  • be physically capable and able to undertake manual work.

 

As vehicle paint sprayers work with chemicals and paints they:

  • wear protective clothing and face masks

What to study at school

  • Computer skills are useful within the workshop as many systems are now computerised.
  • Trade Maths will provide you with the numeracy skills needed for the paperwork associated with the role.
  • English communications will help to develop your written and oral skills.

How to Train

A Vehicle Spray Painter needs to complete an apprenticeship.

To gain an apprenticeship you should apply to a Registered Training Organisation that will help you to organise a placement, and will provide off-job training.
